A Christmas Carol di ARTHUR RACKHMAN
Non è il primo a
illustrare Il Canto di Natale di
Charles Dickens e nemmeno l’unico ma chi conosce il suo tratto non lo può
dimenticare sfogliando le vecchie edizioni della nonna da lui commentate. La
prima edizione del racconto esce nel dicembre del 1843 illustrata da Blicky,
alias John Leech, un artista che collaborerà strettamente con l’autore anche in
seguito con una serie di storie che appariranno ogni anno in occasione del
Natale. Questa prima edizione è composta da solo quattro tavole ma è successivamente
con il pittore Arthur Rackhman (1905) che i personaggi si animeranno più
vibranti che mai come parte integrante della narrazione. L’artista con il suo segno
semplice a punta di china, falsamente indeciso e colorato ad acquarello a tinte
pastello ha rappresentato i personaggi della favola che durante il Natale si
usa raccontare ai ragazzi. Le scene sono quelle dell’incontro del vecchio Mr.Scrooge
con lo Spirito del Natale nelle sue proiezioni nel Passato, nel Presente e nel Futuro.
Una storia che interroga l’uomo sulla vita e i suoi valori, sul concetto di
felicità, propria e altrui, sul bene e sul male, sui rimpianti del passato e
sui propositi futuri. La mano dell’artista incide sul carattere rude,
graffiante e algido del protagonista, Mr. Scrooge, caricandolo, proprio come una caricatura deve poter fare, del suo
egoismo e cinismo.
Lo stile con le sue flessuose e scarnite figure allungate
riflette quello dell’epoca di Arthur ovvero del movimento dell’Art Nouveau, o
per meglio dire del Modern Style, quello che invase il mondo intero dal 1890 al
1910, quello che verrà chiamato il Trionfo
della linea un modello esportato fin nelle colonie oltremare. Proprio come Rackhman
che da giovane aveva raggiunto l’Australia per motivi di salute e dove la sua
fantasia era stata certamente favorita da questa importante esperienza,
percettibile soprattutto nei disegni da lui curati per un’altra fiaba quella di
Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie di Lewis Carroll.
La trasposizione
cinematografica di A Christmas Carol nel
film di Robert Zemerckis (2009) ha animato i disegni di Arthur scurendone le
figure e gli spazi. Arthur Rackhaman è stato un artista che ha illustrato la
più bella letteratura di tutti i tempi da Shakespeare, Barrie, Grimm e Wagner. Quelle
cartoline di Natale che ci fanno ancora sognare e sospirare!

He is not the first to illustrate Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, and he is not the only one, but he who knows his
trait cannot forget him browsing the old editions of his grandmother he
commented on. The first issue of the novel was published in December 1843,
illustrated by Blicky, alias John Leech, an artist who will collaborate closely
with the author even later, with a series of stories that will appear each year
on Christmas. This first edition is composed of only four boards but it is later
that, with the painter Arthur Rackhman (1905), the characters will animate more
vibrant than ever as an integral part of the narrative. The artist, with his
simple Indian ink mark, falsely uncertain and painted with watercolor pastel
tints, represented the characters of the fairy tale that is usually told to the
children during Christmas. The scenes are those of the encounter of the old
Mr.Scrooge with the Spirit of Christmas in his projections in the Past, in the
Present and in the Future.
A story that questions man about life and its
values, about the concept of happiness, both of itself and others, about good
and bad, about the regrets of the past and future prospects. The artist's hand emphasizes
the rude, scratchy and algid character of the protagonist, Mr. Scrooge, loading him, just as a caricature must
be able to do, of his selfishness and cynicism. The style, with its supple and slim
elongated figures, reflects that of Arthur's era that is the Art Nouveau
movement, or rather that of the Modern Style, which invaded the entire world
from 1890 to 1910 and which will be called the Triumph of the Line, a model exported up to overseas colonies.
Just
as Rackhman who as a young man had reached Australia for health reasons and
where his imagination had certainly been favored by this important experience,
perceived in particular in the drawings he produced for another tale, that of
Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. A Christmas
Carol film adaptation in Robert Zemerckis's movie (2009) animated Arthur's drawings
by darkening its figures and spaces. Arthur Rackhaman was an artist who
illustrated the most beautiful literature of all times from Shakespeare to
Barrie, Grimm and Wagner. Those Christmas cards that still make us dream and
sigh!
